Their Perfect Romance |
We met in 2004 working at a nearby shopping center. We remember the exact
moment we caught each other’s eyes, but it was another year before we even had our
first date! once we were finally together, we wondered why we waited so long!
Stephen proposed after dinner one evening by the pond on my parents’ farm. he
suggested a walk around the farm and I was completely unaware of what he had
planned, so i went straight to the barn to play with the baby goats and the horse.
he patiently waited until i was finished and then suggested we walk down to the
pond where, he refreshed my memory about the significance of the spot where
we stood. it was the first place we kissed after spending almost a year apart while
he was deployed to iraq and i lived in Spain. it was that kiss that began our life
journey together and so it was the perfect place for him to ask me to be his wife!
Their Ideal Wedding
our ceremony was at Providence Presbyterian Church in my hometown, Salisbury, mD.
it was the church where all my friends and family watched me grow up. I wouldn’t think
of celebrating our special day without all of them! our faith is an integral part of our
relationship, so it was important for me to have my pastor marry us.
our reception was in my parents’ backyard on their farm. I wanted the natural beauty
of the outdoors, as well as freedom for guests to take a walk, see the animals, or
relax under the tent.
that meant simple wholesome and “down-to-earth” touches. my sister tied white
ribbons around all the animals’ necks, and i ordered parasols in my wedding colors
to protect my girls from the sun during the photoshoot. they turned out to be the
focal point of some of my favorite pictures!
the whole day was beautiful, and we all enjoyed a surprise in the evening. the farm
is adjacent to a minor-league baseball stadium which was hosting a home game. at
the end of the evening, was a fireworks display that seemed like it was on top of us
and everyone thought we had planned fireworks for our wedding!
Their Unique Choices
an outdoor summer wedding meant a dress that was flowing and light-weight. i
tried on So many dresses, but when i finally put on “my” dress i loved the chiffon
overlay and the airy feel of the dress.
i had seven bridesmaids that were a wonderful blend of friends and family and
Stephen had seven groomsmen and we also had a flower girl and page boy.
the colour from the start was granny Smith apple green. as i started planning, i
kept envisioning a dark purple to contrast, and it turned out beautifully!
i loved my flowers. my mother grew most of them, and i ordered some of the
more rare ones - such as the calla lilies. my aunts arranged them the morning of
the wedding, making them extra special.
We did a lot of planning and decorating ourselves. granny Smith apples were a given
for the centerpieces. the pop of the purple flowers seemed to pull everything together!
i actually found out about our photographer andrew leggett through my matron
of honor, who attended a wedding that he shot the year before. She mentioned
that he was looking to do some shoots in the States, and as soon as we got in
touch, i knew he was genuine and really loved his craft. having andrew here from
aU was such a unique experience. he not only shot our wedding, my dress fitting,
engagement photos and the rehearsal, but he photographed his exploration of a
new place. there is so much creativity in his photos because it was just as new
and exciting to him as it was to us! my guests still mention how friendly and helpful
he was at the wedding and reception - he really won them over! When Stephen and
i look back at the photos, i can still hear andrew saying “give her a bit of a kiss,
mate!” he didn’t have to ask us twice! •
