Real Life Bride - Alex & Paul

Sun Oct 17th 2010

Their Perfect Romance
Paul is a bookseller and I am in publishing and worked in a
bookstore in Notting Hill. One day we discovered my youth
hostel was just round the corner from his home in Kensington.
He asked me for coffee and that as they say in the classics, was
the beginning of a beautiful romance. We had no doubt about our
lifetime commitment to each other, and every so often one of us
would light-heartedly propose but we didn’t take them seriously.
We returned to England and visited Kensington. Near Paul’s old
home is a locked walled garden and I found someone to unlock it
for me. I organised a table with candles and red wine and a ring.
I was serious and I wanted to propose to show my commitment
was as strong as his. He thought we were meeting at a local
French restaurant. When I rang him and said I was lost he wasn’t
surprised, as I get lost quite easily. We arranged to meet outside
his old home and I dragged him over to the garden and showed
him the ring and asked him to marry me. The ring was for him and
it became his wedding ring.
Their Ideal Wedding
We decided to have a wedding to celebrate our 10 years of being
together. 1st March 2009 was exactly 10 years from the day we
had coffee. We were married on the grass outside my parents’
shack at Tugun Beach. Our celebrant was a retired schoolteacher
and friend of my uncle. Our theme was vintage; we even asked our
guests to dress in the time period of 1920s-30s. After I walked
down the ‘aisle’ our celebrant read an excerpt from The Prophet. It
was our celebration so instead of the usual readings etc, the bridal
party acted out a scene from Much Ado About Nothing. Another
friend sang an original composition for our wedding.
Their Unique Choices
In keeping with the vintage look, the bridesmaids wore chocolate
brown, fascinators and big vintage earrings. The flowers were
cream roses with brown berries. I wore a birdcage veil and
1920s styled dress. The men wore dark brown suits, hats and
different coloured trainers.
Our dog Neo, was part of the bridal party and stood with the
groomsmen.
Our photographers -The Best Man -were recommended to us
and it turned out that Leith was an old family friend that we had
lost touch with! Our guests had Latin/Salsa dancing lessons while
our photoshoot was on. Later at the reception there was going
to be a fantastic Latin band, Miguel, and we wanted everyone
up and dancing. We love this band so much we changed our
wedding venue two weeks before the wedding because of noise
restrictions at the first venue. We had our reception at Elephant
Rock Café surrounded by the ocean.
As a memento of our day, we bought vintage Penguin books that
are now on the market -my favourite, Pride and Prejudice and
Paul’s, Love in the Time of Cholera. We wrote a personal note in
them and sent them to our guests after the wedding. •
