Their Perfect Romance

I had gone out to Emerald with a friend who works at the mines
and we met up with other workers and friends at a bar. andrew
was part of the group. We clicked and he took me to the local
rodeo and romance bloomed. as i teach and live in Yeppoon, we
had a long-distance romance, meeting when we could and making
every moment matter. andrew proposed on a trip to Brisbane while
we were at my favourite restaurant. it is now my very favourite
restaurant in Brisbane.
Their ideal Wedding
We are both anglicans and there is one anglican church in Yeppoon:
St James. i teach at St Ursula’s College and we had our reception
at gabriel hogan house, part of the boarding school section of the
college. the minister who married us also works at the college and
is a friend.
Their Unique Choices
The colours we chose were ivory and celedon green, which is a
vintage green. my dress from Wendy makin was champagne. i had
3 bridesmaids, 1 tween-maid, and 2 flower girls and andrew had 3
groomsmen. He wore a black suit with a champagne vest to match
my dress and the guys wore black with matching vests and ties to
the girl’s dresses.
our flowers were champagne and ivory roses and I wore a side veil
with feathers, instead of the traditional tulle veil and headpiece.
I also wore andrew’s grandmother’s diamond broach, which is a
family tradition for all the brides in the family to wear it. i also wore
my nanna’s sapphire ring for something blue, without realising the
church and reception room also colour matched.
our florist did fish bowl vases with green roses and other greenery.
We also had fairy lights and had placed tea lights at every setting
as part of the thank-you gifts, but i guess they fitted in so much
with the table decorations that our guests didn’t realise that the ‘to
have and to hold, to keep your beer cold’ stubby cooler wasn’t the
only gift for them.
The cake was a combined labour of love. mum made the bottom
tier and andrew’s mum made the top two tiers and my head
bridesmaid decorated the cake.
JK Design Photography was fantastic. I saw their work at an expo
and they were available to come from Brisbane. We have some lovely
shots at the classic little church, the beach and the college in the area
that was built around 1918. the major dust storm had occurred that
week and the leftover dust made the sunset photos spectacular.
a string quartet played on the lawn while canapés were served, but
we had a four-piece live band for the reception. We had traditional
speeches because the guest list was mainly family and very close
friends and so the speeches were very meaningful.
the live band came recommended and they set the whole
celebratory tone for the night. •
